Atrophic Vaginitis

Atrophic vaginitis is one type of vaginitis and it is the inflammation of the vaginal lining due to the thinning and reduced lubrication in the vagina. This is a result from estrogen decrease after menopause. Other conditions might contribute to the dryness of the vagina like the medication of anti-estrogen and surgical conditions resulting to the decrease of estrogen level.

This is an estrogen replacement the gives estrogen to the place it is applied to. Topical estrogen is a way to bring back the estrogen’s decreased levels in the vulvar and vaginal skin. This is inserted inside or applied directly. Common brands are Premarin, Ogen, Estrace and Dienesterol.

To avoid pain and discomfort, use a lubricant such as vegetable oil during intercourse and place an amount of estrogen using a topical cream on vaginal applicator. This will make insertion easier. Vaginal applicators are used to insert topical estrogen replacement into the vagina.
